Now we
would like to introduce the newest addition to our farm...Shrek
the Miniature Donkey. He's a Sicilian mini, about hip high at
the back, a gelded jack - after this morning.
These pictures were taken the morning after his visit to the vet
and ride home. This is a tough little dude - it took almost
three times the recommended dose of tranquilizer to get him to
lie down for castration surgery. And it still took four people
to hold him still for the procedure (but to be fair, Charles
says it would take at least that many people to hold him down
for a similar surgery).
After a couple of weeks of healing and normal quarantine, Shrek
will join the female goats and sheep in the field as their guard
and companion.
Our farm keeps getting funnier!

Next
photos are our first good lambs -
mother is Cathy Gale, a Khatadin, and father is Cousin It, a Jacob.
The mostly black panda-faced lamb is a girl (actually she looks
kind of like a Holstein calf). And the white with black collar
and spots is a boy. Born between 11 and 11:30 6th March 2009 ,
pictures taken about 12:15.
Every sheep is doing well.

My brown nanny goat, Eliza, and my bottle lamb, Emma Piel, are
both expected to deliver their pregnancies within two weeks.
Then I just have one more ewe that I think is pregnant.
We will keep you posted! |

Emma
Piel, our little bottle lamb, became a mother this morning,
surprising us all. I wasn't expecting them for a couple of
days, yet.
Both
are boys.

The
two lambs born last week have now been moved to the pasture with
everyone else. Still one ewe and one nanny goat to deliver this
spring.

We
had our final lamb of the year born yesterday evening. Tweed
(the mom) came to us after her only lamb last spring died soon
after birth. We weren't even sure she was pregnant because of
her long wool and overanxious personality. She had one ewe lamb
- just beautiful.

Then
we picked up two goat bucklings from Bleugrass Chevre producer
Susan Miller near Lexington, KY. I offered to swap one of my
bucklings for one of hers to widen our herd genetics, but she
didn't want any more males. Instead she offered to give me
one!
After we loaded the first one into the car, she insisted that we
take a second. Mousse (brown ears) and Tagalong (white ears)
are unrelated, so now we have three layers of herd genetics,
making almost endless breeding possibilities.
|
We
still have one goat who is pregnant, but she looks like she's
about to pop! |
