GILBERDYKE NEWSLETTER - APRIL 2009

After 13 years of bathing big dogs with buckets, and little dogs in the office sink, we are now all sophisticated here after the official opening of our smart new shower room in B Block, the result of over £500 worth of fundraising by Mary Birkill, Christine Wood, Carolyn Cox and Sue Currey.

The  speech was made, the ribbon cut, the plaque unveiled - and Lorraine bathed Staffie Tia to demonstrate the new facilities to much applause before tea and cakes to celebrate. A wonderful mod Con. to benefit us all, so thanks everyone concerned for such a wonderful contribution to Gilberdyke life!

Another improvement is the smart new fencing for the paddock, providing a safe play area for the dogs, but removable for special events such as the annual open day.  Our handyman Pete (who created the shower room) and Angela’s husband Martin, are working hard to complete this major project, funded by the £2500 raised from the Three Peaks Walk last summer (Andrew Swinley and friends will be repeating the experience again this year - sponsorship forms are now available!)

The finishing touch for the new paddock fence will be four lovely gates donated by Mr & Mrs Ward of Goole, who celebrated their Golden Wedding by asking family and friends to donate to Jerry Green instead of giving anniversary gifts. The gates are the result.

Happy Fiftieth, and thank you all very much.

Meanwhile, Pat and Eric Hyde are kindly donating new curtains for the kennels, making everywhere warm and attractive, they also keep the kennels nice and cool in summer. Pat is still busy at her sewing machine as I write…….and they, along with Pat’s sister Lou will be running, a Jerry Green stand at South Cave car boot sale.  So make a date to visit on Sunday the 17th May and find a bargain!

The Easter Raffle was a success and made over £200, with first to fourth prize winners being, Mrs C West, Sandra Nelson, Mr Appleyard and Mr Gash, with another fourteen prizes given out; thank you all for buying tickets, even if you did not win!

And thank you, too, to the ladies who so kindly knit and crochet dog blankets for us. Homemade blankets especially, make the dogs feel at home, and, on a practical note, are warm and easy to wash and dry - a great bonus.  And if anyone has any odd and ends of knitting wool, think of us and donate, so our lovely ladies can make more blankets and cosier dogs.

All these projects make Gilberdyke a real home from home. Home is where the heart is - and lots of people have been finding space in their hearts and new homes for Gilberdyke dogs since the last newsletter.

Claude, the Rottie featured in last month’s newsletter found tied to gates in a layby, has a new family living with Ruby another Jerry Green Dog. As have Toby and Molly Terrier, Floyde, Tara, Inca, Star, Mikey and Betty Boo. Long term resident Harry has a home (where he is loved to bits!) and a six year  old very large, and very mischievous St Bernard , Scooby, who came to us due to family illness, has now found a lovely new home with volunteer dog walker, and supporter Lou he has settled in well with Bonnie, Springer Spaniel who she adopted over a year ago.

And our favourite old Lab cross, Charlie, rehomed at 14, has a new lease of life as well as a home, and is even swimming! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Jessop and Monty are to go new homes soon, but we still have plenty of dogs needing someone. Could that be you?

Zander is a special case ( pictured left)- he was originally going to be thrown into the canal when a puppy, but was rescued. He came here two years ago because his owner could no longer cope as she was having a baby. Zander is a medium sized, happy playful boy looking for an active family, perhaps with older children as he could happily play ball all day! Strong, happy, quiet and clean but often timid, at four Zander desperately needs a proper home to bring out the best in him.

The same could be said for Mary, (pictured right)

a five year old Chow cross who has been with us almost three years. A lovely affectionate dog, intelligent and friendly, but very timid, she takes time to show her best side to new people. We love her to bits here, and want to see this inquisitive responsive dog happy and settled at last.

If you would like to help the dogs, sponsor Angela and Rosie on the Three Peaks Walk, or have a late spring clean, and contribute items for the car boot sale or stalls at the Open Day And Fun Dog Show on September 27th. Tombola prizes are always welcome, as are bric a brac and books. Or you might want to sponsor a class in the dog show instead.

A word of warning to Staffie owners especially; bogus RSPCA officers are at work in the Hull area. Looking official, they arrive at the door claiming complaints have been made about the dog who lives there and attempt to take it away - it is thought for dog fighting or baiting. Don’t be fooled! And don’t hand your dog over! Ask for paperwork and identification, and if in doubt ring the RSPCA or the police. Real officials would expect you did no less.

If you want to do something practical for Gilberdyke and get fit for summer, volunteer dog walkers are always welcome. Ring the kennels for a chat on 01430 449112. Ring also if you are looking for a dog to join your family - it is impossible to put all dogs on the website, although we list and show as many as we can. Callers are also welcome, every afternoon except Wednesday, between 1.30pm and 4pm.

Dont forget the shop at Gilberdyke Kennels, with a wide range of stock from lovely hand crafted birthday cards donated by a supporter at £1 each, to sacks of dog food.

It is a legal requirement to have your dog tagged, with the risk of a fine up to £2,000, so it is useful to know that ID barrels, as well as a range of attractive and inexpensive engraved tags to order, can be bought here.

Thought for the Month:

The difference between cats and dogs is that dogs come when called and cats take a message and get back to you.

(Last birthdays birthday card)

Happy dog days!

With best wishes from Angela and All at Gilberdyke.

Until next time!
