GILBERDYKE NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2009

Very kindly written by Volunteer Liz Gilbey

Hello from all at Bennettland Lane in the second edition of our new Gilberdyke Newsletter. Everyone seemed very pleased with our first one, so here we are again, keeping you up to date with all thats going on.

Kennel visitors can collect a paper copy, but updates are also sent out by email. Just contact eriding@jerrygreendogs.co.uk to add your name to our email list. It couldnt be easier!

Snow, ice and the credit crunch continue to have an impact on us all, but the work of rescuing and rehoming dogs never stops.

http://www.jerrygreendogs.org.uk/getimage.ashx?type=2&size=1&dogid=c522cc7f-15d9-42d7-bb07-6d5f82afdd44Despite being featured in our last newsletter Harry - a laid back lemon and white beagle cross -remains with us awaiting his perfect new home, as do a couple of other deserving long stayers. Mary is a big, cuddly teddy bear of a dog, who came as a stray four years ago. She keeps being passed over because she is large but very timid, she is beautiful, intelligent and so affectionate when she gets to know you. Molly (see picture right) a sweet little black grey and white rough coated terrier/collie cross is responsive, walks nicely on her lead and just needs a home where she will be the only dog and get the attention she deserves after five years with us.

We have high hopes for Jessop,

a handsome black and tan collie/GSD cross, who should soon be available for rehoming after months of patient socializing. He came to us before Christmas, aged five, a big baby who had never been trained or outside his home, very sensitive and frightened of the strange outside world. But he is coming out of his shell now, and his personality really shining. Hes going to make someone a wonderful and rewarding friend.

Remember twelve year old Jack Russell, Bengie, from our last newsletter?

When Bengies owner, a great Jerry Green supporter, died, Bengie came to us. His owners friends and neighbours decided to raise money to buy Bengie his own new bed, thinking he would never be rehomed. But someone fell in love with Bengie at first sight, and he soon found a happy new home. So Bengies old friends decided to do their bit for Jerry Greens instead. The result was a wheelbarrow load of dog food, kongs, toys, two hairdryers and towels for canine makeovers, balls and treats. Thank you, everyone for your generosity and thoughtfulness!

Wallace and Gromit (yes, thats their real names!) two miniature schnauzers, found a lovely home together, they are now living with a new Sister, an Irish Terrier called Dolly. Boys rising four, they came to us due to their owners ill health, and have made perfect family pets.

And thanks, also, to everyone who has donated Easter Raffle prizes, other food, treats and bedding, including especially the wonderful gift of a roll of vet-bed which is especially good for ill or post operative dogs, warm, snuggly and which washes and wears well - a great luxury.

Other recent rehomings to be especially proud of are Rover, a classic example of the plain black dog who never got noticed. This Labrador cross started life with us as a stray puppy seven years ago, was rehomed but returned two years later due to a marriage break up, and had been with us ever since. Until a few weeks ago, proving our theory that every dog has his perfect home, he just has to find it!

Other successes have been big Ben; a lovely GSD who has gone to live with another Jerry Green dog, Trigger, and little Ben, an elderly Yorkie who had been living in a car for six weeks after his owner was made homeless. Little Ben has settled happily in a new home, where he made immediate best friends with the dog next door and found a favourite spot sitting on the windowsill!

And we must not forget Oliver, (picture right), who loves a cup of tea and now has his perfect new home and a favourite place at the end of the bed.

Tickets are now available for our Easter Raffle, to be drawn on Easter Sunday Prizes include two lovely hampers, and other treats, with tickets 25p each or £1 a book, available from the office. Please support this fundraiser.

Angela and Rosina are due to tackle the Three Peaks Walk on June 6. They will be accompanied by other stalwart Jerry Green supporters and hopefully representatives from Jerry Greens other six rescue centres on this daunting challenge. For the less energetic, sponsorship forms will soon be available instead!

Make a date for the annual Open Day and Fun Dog Show on September 27th.

Its a great chance to meet the dogs and other Jerry Green supporters, enjoy the show, find a bargain on the stalls and expect a few surprises!

Dont forget the shop at Gilberdyke Kennels, with a wide range of stock from lovely hand crafted birthday cards donated by a supporter at £1 each, to sacks of dog food.

It is a legal requirement to have your dog tagged, with the risk of a fine up to £2,000, so it is useful to know that ID barrels, as well as a range of attractive and inexpensive engraved tags to order, can be bought here.
