Linda's notes  & photos for this month from Bumble Bee Marsh ...

1.3.7

TO S

Now I’m back to the snow again, from the beautiful mimosa-blooming Rome where I met the spring and the starlings who soon will come to Humlekärr for nesting.

Look! And listen to the sounds of very early spring - dripping from the roof and chirpy Great tits! The icicles are now melting and falling down one by one, together with the melting snow from the roof.... a true sign of spring! But it´s dangerous to stay near the house now, for people as well as for animals, since you can be hit by this pretty heavy and sharp icicles.

I took this video clip today from the bedroom window upstairs...SPEAKERS ON !!!

more news soon ...

see how the chicks are growing!

Mother Berit has now abandoned them, and is back with the adult fowls again almost all  day.

Luckily they still got their heating lamp and each other to turn to. It is now possible to see the difference between boys and girls.

Can you see that some of them got a bit bigger crests than the others?

A pack of 5 red deer came here this afternoon since they had heard through the grape-vine about the free meals here! Its the first time for about 5-6 years that Ive seen so many red deer at the same time here in Humlekärr. But they of course didn't want to show up close enough to each other, not until it already was dark .

I could therefore not take any picture of them together....

But here comes a pic of the leader-hind...

Lars came back from a short business trip in Coventry UK yesterday, and Linnéa and Martin arrived in Dublin early this morning.

So I have had reports on the blooming daffodils  and fruit trees in England!

Here in Humlekärr we also have had lovely weather today.   + 8 C and the snow is melting very rapidly. Everybody has had an enjoyable day.

Ehere we are enjoying the spring weather

..but somebody of course still has  to stay indoors and take care of the housework !!!

THE BOSS! ALAN IN THE VALLEY

The ice of the lake has just started to break up, and hopefully I can get in the canoe soon to search for my ducks who are on the run again since more than 2 months.

But, to be honest, I think its no use since I suspect they´ve followed the flights of wild geese.

Aged daddy Kalle, the only duck who is left behind, is still anxious waiting for his family to come back.

I really hope spring is here to stay now, even though it arrived some weeks earlier than normal. However, the snow has vanished in just a few days - creeks and ditches are streaming and purling of melted snow masses.

The first buds of Spring´s earliest wild flowers -

Hepatica and Coltsfoot - have already come out.

Gruesome nightly calls from a Tawny Owl right outside the bedroom keep me awake, while delightful bird songs - besides sparrows and tits, now even Larches and Blackbirds -

make me feel just happy.

...And the ground shows more marks than ever of Wild Boar´s rooting. They´ve even been grabbing here at the end of our country road, and in the garden. But they only come when it´s dark, so we almost never see them.

And the ground shows more marks than ever of Wild Boars rooting.
The other night they even demolished Humlekärr´s biggest and most ancient ant-hill..

Signe is inspecting the damage !

..and some poor drowsy survived inhabit"ants" (!)

they are now trying their hands at the reconstruction.

Warning !  here comes the video clip of the ants, busy with reconstructing their hill, demolished by Wild boars the other night.

these are clever creatures ..

DEER

23.3.7

Tuffbocken

Vitnos

Look at the old buck how long his horns now have become! and he has started to shed the winter fur. Very soon he will also rub the furry skin away from the horns.

We use to call him Tuffbocken (The tough buck) since we are sure he is the one who taught Signe not to chase roe deer, about 5 years ago. Every time she set off after him he turned around, lowered his horns.... and started to chase her instead!!! which was very embarrassing for Signe. That´s why she doesn´t chase roe deer any longer.

I have noticed that every time he is coming now he is in company of one of FOUR youngsters - the 2 little bucks and two little hinds. One of the hinds I think is little Bambi, who I hadn’t seen here for so long.

Tuffbocken is behaving as if he was a single dad of four children, and is teaching them how to fend for themselves. Now and then I see him and one of the boys butt each other very carefully, as if he is teaching them how to butt!

Vitnos (White-nose), is a very shy young lady who looks like if she belongs to a completely deferent family than all the other roe deer I´ve seen so far here in the Humlekärr area.

Just when I had sent  the last  photos for the diary Tuffbocken showed up together with Vitnos.

When I then started to record them from upstairs one of the young bucks also showed up, and when he discovered Vitnos standing there with HIS dad, at HIS place in the lilac bush, eating HIS pellets he made an attack.

And when he did so she let out a little sound before she jumped away, a sound I’ve never heard before.

But I caught it on the video clip....

THE ATTACK

The mediator Daddy Tuffbocken however managed to make the kids friends very soon, like the good father he is. After a while, when all 3 had eaten up their pellets, they run away together and Tuffbocken and his little boy took the opportunity to butt each other a bit.

BUTTING

BUT FRIENDS AGAIN !

PS:  Jacko (parrot) is quarrelling with me from downstairs and drowning the evening song of the Black birds. He has been angry with me all the day because he wants to go out , but I keep saying it is still to cold outside for South American parrots!
