january ...

Linda's notes & photos for this month from Bumble Bee Marsh ...

January 2007

15th January 2007
 Young Hen Berit ...
BeritBerit under the Stable     Berit on some eggs! (January !!!)

Here are some pictures of the young hen Berit - one of the black chickens who were hatched her in Humlekärr last spring- who has been disappeared for more than 2 weeks. Now I finally caught her red handed underneath the stable - brooding 12 eggs! I put her and all the eggs in a basket, and home we went to the hen-house again. Now she’s lying there like a very good girl, still brooding.

Later Report from the Henhouse

Here come 2 pictures of some newborn chickens.  The little mother Berit was such a good girl and let me touch the chicks and take pictures of them.

15.1.7  I even attach some new pictures of the cats! Let me introduce them for you...

16.1.7 Chicks update - Here comes a big bunch of new pictures  from the hen-house today !!!

Can you hear them !

 17.1.7

Today I found out that the chickens are 12!!! When I counted them yesterday they were only 9 - Berit has fooled me once again! But I don’t understand how. There were no unhatched eggs left yesterday, so 3 of them must have been clinging tight to Berit's feathers while I lifted her up for counting the chicks.

I have spoken with some experienced fowl-owners and they say it’s just amazing that a hen can manage to hatch all of her eggs to alive chicks, especially when she is so young, and the eggs are as many as 12. And in the middle of the winter!!! They say Berit is a real miracle-mum  - that’s why the local newspaper already has reported TWICE about her and her chicks!!!

17.1.7   MAGPIE RESCUE

While I was in Katrineholm shopping, I rescued a magpie from being killed by some other magpies. I’ve never seen such a cruel fight. Some other magpies were picking hard on it’s chest while it was lying on it’s back.

I of course chased the mob away and stayed there for half an hour to see if it was all right, while the mob was hanging around waiting for going to a new attack. Of course I could not leave it there. I asked by passing people to help me caching it, but NOBODY was interested, they just walked away!!!

But I succeeded to catch it by my self and took it home to Humlekärr. It is now recovering here, and it is eating and drinking. It is really thin and need to eat much before it can be released.

I think I will keep it indoors until spring, and release it here in Humlekärr.

23.1.7   REPORT FROM COLD Humlekärr

It's 14 degrees of frost today !

26.1.7

SUNRISE AT Humlekärr

Signe, above, just loves it since she originates from Lapland, and is now patrolling the Humlekärr surroundings even more assiduous than usual (protecting cats, rabbits and fowls from predators).
The rabbits think snow and cold weather is OK as long as they are being feed. Mucklan is asking for an apple on the picture.

The wild birds have been very lucky so far this winter since it has been snow-free and mild, but today they are very grateful for the free meals we serve them outside the kitchen-window.

Most of the fowls stay indoors when it is cold and snowy, but some of the former factory-hens love life too much for not going out for a quick scratch even though it is as cold as today.  50 of our 55 hens and 4 of our 12 roosters (eluded the mass-slaughter of rooster-chickens) who lived their first 15 months in a cruel egg-factory. When the time was in for them to be sent to the slaughter-house we bought them for 10 kronor ( about 1 pound) each. Life really feels meaningful when you can rescue animals from cruelties like that and give them a wonderful life instead!

26.1.7 Chicks' progress
With so many babies Berit will very soon be unable to warm them all under her wings, and it can still turn to be a cold winter. Therefore I bought them a heating-lamp today.

......aren’t they just gorgeous!!!!!

29.1.7  rare bird seen PhalacrocoraxCarbo This was a very rare sighting and very exciting!!!

PhalacrocoraxCarbo

Other winter birds sighted by me at the end of January are
Blue tit Winter Blackbird
Sparrows Emberiza Cirtonella (yellow sparrow)
Despite the winter cold the birds give a wonderful display of colour and courage
