Our Autumn

 day out ...

Sue's describes

PURCHENA DAY OUT...

Maggie and I have been  on one of our walking trips  to the  pretty village  of Purchena, inland between Albox and Baza on the 334 where there is the ruin of an old Moorish fort  and,  until last year,  there was  an unsafe  old mountain tract covered in loose stone and rocks  leading to  the Purchena Castillo.

This pathway  has now got evenly raised well built steps with an anti slip surface, hand rails and   several well spaced bench seats where you can rest as you climb to the top  and it is quite some climb.

These seats I must admit to having taken advantage of as I am not a great lover of heights and I knew at almost 3/4s of the way up that I was as high as I wished to go.

Maggie on the other hand, who has no fear of heights carried on upwards and viewed the surrounding countryside from the various vantage points with notice boards explaining the views.

She was also lucky enough to spot a fawn on the edge of the clearing.

I will be looking  at the photographs along with you !

I did enjoy my sit down  and I did have some lovely scenery to look at too.  At this point in the Almanzora valley we have lots of pine trees which is a lovely change from the usual arid empty hills and because of this it is an area that many ex pats have been drawn to  live.

This pueblo  has been an important site way back to Roman times  and it should also be noted that Purchena (though not much more than a village by most standards) is in fact a city, due to its importance and status dating from the Moorish times when the fort was of  great defensive importance.

The Castillo had a strategic position  for hundreds of years, not just for the Moors but also for the subsequent rule by the Christians.

After all that exercise we dropped down the hill into the pueblo and  popped into one of the bars for a tapas lunch, well earned I might say.

Footnote !

As it was such a lovely day we decided to drive just a little further up towards Baza and look at another village, Tivoli, but on this occasion we were not as impressed and after a walk around we decided that this was one not worth a second visit and set off home.
