Early March ... |
|
 |
We are being very lucky with our weather, ideal
for walking.....
nice and sunny but not too hot

Maggie and I decided for our latest walk to head for San Miguel,
a fisherman’s pueblo on the edge of the sea.... At this
time of year it is very quiet being the off season and
most of the villas and apartments were closed up.... and it
looks like a place which comes alive when the season starts.

It is only a small pueblo and still has
working fishermen with their boats pulled up on the beach. There
are a number of very nice looking restaurants along the
broad-walk, where you can eat and enjoy the
catch of the day.
At this time of year the car park has a number of
motor-homes parked up, and who can blame them really. It
is a really nice place to stay with a lovely beach to enjoy and
a view over the bay towards Almeria with the snow covered
mountains in the distance.

Walking south along the long straight main road
towards
LA SALINAS...
..on
your left are the working Salt Pans which have been there
since ancient times (Phoenicians and Romans).
They form part of a sunken flood basin without an
outlet to the sea, where an old lagoon filled with rain
silt from the Sierra and sands brought in by the fierce
easterly winds.
It has large colonies of
birds including many pink flamingos and storks.

At Las
Salinas there is the ruined church which stands on its own at
the side of the road...

Only one week after our walk it has been
reported in one of our local newspapers that the Guardia Civil
are investigating if satanic ritual was carried out at the
church recently after a local resident found satanic symbols and
Latin phrases written on the floor and walls.
It is in a very
sad state of repair and suffers constant plundering and
vandalism with candlesticks, windows and even the font having
been stolen since the church was closed in 2004. There is hope
of restoration but that is estimated at around 400,000 Euros. I
was quite shocked and amazed to read about the possible
resurgence of Satanism in Almeria.

I must
say even when Maggie and I walked by the Church and on into the
small pueblo next to it called Almadraba de Montelva there was
a very eerie feeling..... there was absolutely no one around,
not even the usual dogs roaming, and it seemed desolate with
not a sole to be seen even though there were cars parked
outside houses. I even joked
at the time that I thought
everyone had been “beamed up” to Mars by spacecraft....

|
We
walked back along a purpose built track alongside the salt pans
where hides have been placed for you to sit in and watch the
flamingos and other birds......

The photo I took is not that
clear but I think you can see the flamingos.
They are such
elegant and beautiful birds.

One
good thing about this walk was the fact that it was at sea level
and of course that pleased me.....no hanging onto cliff
faces......
