sun and sea...  sun and sea...  sun and sea...  sun and sea...  sun and sea...  sun and sea...

First two Wednesdays in February.

The Cabo de Gata National Park is about 1 ˝ hours away from home but a journey worth taking for the prize at the end.

We have been twice now and still have many more walks to experience.

On both occasions we arrived at San Jose, a white pueblo and old fisherman´s town ...

but which is now the starting point for a number of marked walks, through exquisite scenery passing beautiful beaches with magnificent views.

SUE AT GENOVESE BEACH

The beaches are separated by enormous volcanic cliffs which we had the “pleasure” of climbing by way of a good wide track clinging to the edges.....

I am not a great lover of heights but keeping well into the near side of the cliffs I did reach the top, went down the other side...

and then after a picnic lunch looking over the most delightful bay did the return climb and descent back to the car.

Our first trip was for an afternoon, spent walking along the edge of the shoreline at the Genoveses Bay just outside of San Jose

The sea was calm and the sun was shining and without doubt I agree with the description that it is thought to be one of the most beautiful landscapes to be seen anywhere in the nature reserve during the spring.

MAGGIE & TINY ON MONSUL BEACH

On our  second visit we took Maggie´s dog Tiny

and were walking for over  5  hours checking out sandy bays and beaches where we saw  the remains of extinct volcanoes  and large sand dunes ,  but  most of that time was  spent walking up and down  the cliff walk along the coast towards the Cabo de Gata  lighthouse   .....

Some of the views from the walk were spectacular and breathtaking if a little unnerving.......

There were numerous other walkers to say hello to and even at this time of year people sitting on the beach.   It is spring here now and everywhere you looked were wild flowering thyme, lavender and tarragon and I only wish I could send the scent down the line to you.

The only sounds were the very gentle lapping of the sea and the sound of birds.

Rather than try to describe the sights we saw ...

I attach a number of photos taken which I hope you enjoy.

3rd Wednesday in Feb...

Decided to go north this week.... as rainy weather looked as though it was coming up from the south.

We went just over the border into the Murcia region north of Aguilas to the Cabo Cope and along to a number of sheltered bays and inlets along the coast towards the Punta de Calnegre.   We had to drive along very small country roads through fields filled with lettuces to get to the parking spot on the top of the cliff overlooking the sea.

As usual at this time of year one or two motor homes were there, wild camping (There is a sign saying ‘NO Camping’)   I don´t personally agree with them doing this, but that is another story..... We got our walking gear together and set off along the designated marked track and eventually found a beach that we could get to without having to turn into mountaineers.  The bay was secluded and as with our other walks the sea was gently lapping onto the shore.

You will see from the photos that there were caves cut into the walls of the cliffs which I am sure give some protection from the sun in the summer.

If you look carefully you will see that someone has spent some time carving a crocodile type animal into the rock..... I am sure it is a modern man carving.  I never think of taking chisels when I go to the seaside!

Once again all that could be heard was the sound of the sea and the birds..... We are so lucky to live in an area where you can get away from everything...

Well, almost!
