fiesta of St Roque

14 - 23 AUGUST 2009

FIESTA WEEK

BEGINNING with a group called “Ad Libitum” with dancing in the streets, the following day was the “Foam Festival” when the square outside the town hall (La Plaza de Espagna)  is filled with foam for children and young people to dance and play in.

SUNDAY began with a solemn Mass in honour of St Roque with the usual procession.  In the evening there was a dancing exhibition by the boys and girls of the local dancing school.

On MONDAY there were puppet shows and other animation which provided enjoyment for the young and the not so young.

Tuesday was the day for the popular comedy theatre of Madrid and was followed on

Wednesday by a talent show by Canal Sur, which is our local regional television station.  I suppose it is based on the X Factor and similar programmes.

Thursday had a concert by the Cristal Orchestra and the election of the Queen and Dames of Honour.

The next day [Friday] finished with the Cristal Orchestra as well as Maxims Orchestra.

Saturday Maxims Orchestra was back along with the Prometida Orchestra starring the famous Gisela.

These were the major events although the days were filled with everything from the inevitable football to cycling eating, painting exhibitions, children’s parades and the like.

Food and entertainment is all free.

Not bad for a town of 4,300 people!

That was the good side of the Fiesta but one should note that many of the evening events don’t start until 11 p.m. and continue throughout the night.  The disco at our local bar finished each “night’s” entertainment at 7.30 a.m.

Naturally a massive firework display marks the end of the Fiesta week; this takes place at about 2.30 a.m. beginning with a fusillade of mortar shells,

which if you had the temerity to be sleeping (which we were) ensured  that you were on your feet to see the body of the display!
