CHRISTMAS IN ALMERIA -
2007 |
 |
|

CHRISTMAS DINNER !
|
|
Christmas
started in mid December as Spain doesn´t yet join in the
Anglo-American spending frenzy in August.
Whilst we had a few
murky days before Christmas, Christmas day itself was
absolutely glorious and indeed the weather has maintained this
behaviour to the end of the month.
|
Unfortunately we do
have to pay for the bright sunny days for the clear skies at
night bring sharp frosts in the early morning, but it is a small
price. |
|
|
|
Christmas here consists
of Christmas Day only... then comes New Years Day, followed by
the Day of the Kings on the 6th January.
Traditionally Spanish
children receive their presents on Kings Day not Christmas Day.
However, kids being kids they have rapidly latched onto the fact
that British children receive their presents at Christmas; in
return British children have latched onto the fact that their
Spanish fellows receive their presents on Kings Day.
So guess what ?
Both nationalities now
require presents on both Christmas Day and Kings Day!

|
|
|
We will endeavour to
photograph
the Kings Day
procession through the pueblo
when the children hurl
sweets into the gardens from the back of trucks etc. Eat your
heart out “Elf and Safety”
As yet no Spanish child
has fallen
off the back of an
unguarded truck,
nor indeed has any
adult had an eye out
from the flying
sweets.

The courting season is
getting well under way for our winter feathered friends, with
the magnificent southern magpies, notable for their enormous
tails.
The Serins in their
canary yellow pulling suits, the Robins, the Sparrows and the
veritable swarms of Wagtails. Also, there are the inevitable
Hoopoes with their magnificent crests.
Bird life here is
absolutely wonderful with Golden Eagles, Kites, Vultures,
Buzzards Egrets etc and later in the year we look forward to the
arrival of the archetypal Mediterranean Bee Eaters after their
winter holiday in Africa, soon followed by the gorgeous Blue
Rollers. The wealth of bird life in this region is enough to
keep any twitcher twitching for many years.
FELIZ NAVIDAD!
