OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

This month we enjoyed my Birthday celebrations here in sunny Spain ...

October opened with all the kids back in school after their 12 week summer holiday....

It doesn´t seem to create a hanging around problem in Spain;

Whether this is because Spanish mothers tend not to work and often go to the coast for the summer ...while dad soldiers on and sees them for the weekend,

or the fact that schools etc provide lots of holiday activities we don´t know.  But anyway the little darlings are not the problem they can be in northern Europe.

The month began with some torrential rain storms (in Spanish they are called by the lovely word “tormentos”)

and the temperature fell accordingly.

After two weeks of rain

my brother and his family came out...

and the weather gave something of a window ...

~ so that we could enjoy my birthday

However, it was still dull and grey but didn't seem to bother them.

It  seemed brighter for me also  ... as I sat opening the

 delightful presents

I received

Meanwhile Choo Choo

was getting to know his

“upright” nieces

One nice feature of my birthday was that the family in Spain were able to contact Chas and Heather in Kentucky USA

and via the webcam had a fun afternoon with Charles taking his laptop around the farm and showing us  all the features including the two goats Maisie and Eliza  the namesakes of our great nieces.

Sue took a photograph of Heather and her two dogs from the screen whilst the webcam was on and it turned out rather well...

Oh the wonders of modern technology

when someone else does it for you !

On their return home the weather broke yet again and we are now experiencing bitter cold, clouds and rain such as is normal in January.

The early morning temperature is around 8 degrees and the mid day peak is little more than 13 degrees.

It is forecast to improve in  3 or 4 days and we certainly hope it does.

The bad weather does not dampen the spirits of the Spaniards with our Fiesta having come and gone there is currently a week long Fair and Fiesta in our nearest town of Albox -

which unfortunately was rained off on Saturday night.

Even in this weather

the British visitors are walking around in tee shirts and shorts  !

Whilst we are wearing polo neck sweater, jumpers, fleeces etc.

We feel quite at home as do the Spaniards who dress similarly

while the Brits are

complaining about the heat!

We have succumbed to putting the winter duvet on the bed and very much appreciate it

particularly after a British style meal (today's lunch was sausages onion gravy and chips) .

Sorry if I am raving on about the weather in good old British style but the weather this month has been “good old British style” for some reason.

If anyone mentions Global warming given them a spanking from me!

GLOBAL WARMING !

The fans are put away the fires are out and on

...but hopefully next month will see an improvement.

The situation is exacerbated by bitterly cold winds off the High Sierra whereas if they came off the sea the temperatures would be much milder.

The hills around us have certainly appreciated the rain and they have turned beautifully green  rather than their usual parched brown  and there is some water in the dry river bed  (rambla) of the Rio Almanzora which is normally the town football pitch, car park etc.

What an October and we would rather it wasn't repeated.
