NOVEMBER
NEWSLETTER |
|
Greetings from Spain ... |
|
|

Mike's Soapbox ...
|
 |
|
Well all in all November could
have been cancelled due to lack of interest,
Starting with
All Souls Day
when the villages troop up to the cemetery with arms full of
flowers in memory of the “dear departed”
|
...followed two days later
by
All Saints Day
which is a Bank Holiday here in Spain. |
| |
|
|
However then the weather
struck with quite torrential rain for about a week during which
a spokesman for the water authority (who must surely have been
trained by British Rail) announced that it was “The wrong sort
of water” and would not help in filling the reservoirs. Well it
seemed pretty darned wet to us! |

|
|
This was followed by a cold
snap during which we had two or three early morning frosts,
which we don’t normally expect until January. At the same time
a high wind was coming off the High Sierra, which made it feel
even colder. Significant snow falls occurred on the high
ground with the snow line being approximately 1600 feet.
|
 |
| |
|
However there is always a silver lining (for
some) as
the
Sierra Nevada has opened its skiing season early with dry powder
in abundance. We are not skiing enthusiasts as we
don’t like the cold and value our limbs. |
 |
|
|
|
|
I suppose one advantage of the
cold snap has been that the scent of Jasmine in the evening has
been replaced by the smell of wood burning stoves, which is
quite delightful. |
|

 |
We are more modernist and use
gas or electric heating
from the mains
...as shown in the
accompanying photograph! |

 |
Mid month there was an improvement in the weather
with sun shine returning and warmer nights, which brought out
the wild flowers as shown.
The
Agaves are thriving with the damp after their summer period of
dormancy and they also provide something of a barrier to
unwanted guests.

Here is a picture of our
pueblo clinging to the side of the hill,
taken from the far side
of the Rio Almanzora, which despite the heavy rain had a bare
trickle,
about 3 feet wide to show for it. |
|
.
The end of the month saw more
rain I just hope that this time it was the “right sort”.
Oh well, onward and upward
lets hope December is an improvement and that we can possibly
sit outside with a BBQ for Christmas dinner.
This is not a
fantasy, we have done it many times, in fact only once in 7
years have we had to eat Christmas dinner inside.
