OUR REGULAR NEWS FEATURE FROM SUNNY SPAIN

FEBRUARY 2009

February was something of an uneventful month with the weather trying to make its mind up whether to improve or not

but by the end of the month the BBQ was out and salads had replaced carrot and swede!

The garden continues to burst into life,

and this is one of the most enjoyable times of the year for plant life,

which tends to be somewhat dormant during the

Spanish summer.

BIRDS

The breeding season continues in full swing for the wildlife

before being replaced by the tourist-breeding season

later in the year!

As suspected the Magpies were incubating their eggs last month and it would now appear that chicks have hatched for we saw a HAWK hovering over some spare ground nearby as flight of three Magpies was immediately despatched to attack the intruder with great screeching and flapping of wings the hawk was quickly chased away - and one assumes the Magpie chicks hadn’t even noticed.

During the month we saw the first Swifts and Martins some of whom will no doubt continue north to enjoy summer in northern Europe.

Also the  Hoopoes (click) are beginning to show, although their breeding call in the morning is not yet apparent.

A little later the “Poop – Poop – Poop “  can start to become a bit of a bind!

FIESTA

The month ended with the celebration of Andalusia Day which this year fell on a Saturday, days off in lieu were therefore taken on Friday by many Spaniards although many others decided on Monday.  With true Spanish pragmatism many of the more traditional establishments and occupations decided to take both days off to avoid confusion!

It is often forgotten in surveys in the more sensationalist newspapers that Spaniards don’t only have more bank holidays than the British but that local bank holidays are also frequent.

Almeria - Provincial Information
Thinking of Andalusia Day made me think you might like to know a bit more about Almeria the Province in which we live...
