AUGUST NEWSLETTER |

sporting comment

Not a bad month for Britain, on the sporting front.

An excellent performance in the Olympics...

 |
... and KP´s Cricket team seem to be performing well.

I hope this continues ...
although there is always a sword of Damocles

in the form of the classic British batting collapse
hanging over us.

Well that is blazing August out of the way and
life is getting somehow back to normal.
Although
the height of the day is excessively hot there are compensations
-
the early morning cool spell is enhanced by the scent of Jasmine
and the late evening cool spell benefits from
honeysuckle.

There is always a bright side.

fiesta time ! |
The Spaniards being generally on holiday have
spent their time fiestaing |
|
including
the Tomatina a bit to
the north of us where thousands of pounds of tomatoes are hurled
at each other in the name of pleasure.

The
fiesta started in the 1940s, was banned in 1955 ~but
because the Spanish wouldn’t stop was legitimised in 1957
~although the council introduced some rules (don’t they always)
...but
to what extent these are obeyed remains a moot point.

Here in Arboleas we had our
Feria y Fiesta
(Fair and fete)
and the main programme is shown in English
.
see programme.....

|
These were the main events, which were augmented
by children’s processions, marching bands paella nights etc. I
hope you agree that it is not a bad show for a town of about
3,000 souls.
Although August is over the fiestas aren’t;
Madrid alone has seven in the coming month!

We have been graced by the presence of
Oppy,
so called because he is an opportunist who can sneak into
the kitchen and down Chutchy´s breakfast, lunch, dinner or
whatever as quick as a flash.
He seems a very nice cat albeit frantically
nervous, hopefully given time and copious quantities of food he
will come round. A photo of the little monster is attached.
The cost of living is therefore soaring as he
eats at least twice as much as Chutchy!

Although thin on the ground we are getting the
odd insect for example this Egyptian Grasshopper....

With August over the garden is starting to move
into Spring mode with
new growth appearing on many of the plants after the summer
dormancy.
Unfortunately our gardener/window cleaner phoned
yesterday to say he is returning to the UK.

|
We don’t fully understand why but we do fully
understand that he will be a great loss to us after two years of
excellent service.
(Think it might have something to do with
his love life).
