Local Villages by Liz Gilbey ...

AIRMYN ...

AIRMYN   is a pretty riverside village at the mouth of the Aire and Ouse.

It has a primary school, memorial hall, playing field, pub and garage, but it's best known feature is probably the riverside clock tower (1866) the main street - a thank you from the village to the second Earl of Beverley, who paid for the school to be built.

The parish church of St David's is Grade II listed, first built in 1318, extended 1676, and with a recently discovered wall painting of an angel, whose history is still under investigation.

Once a port - until Goole came into being - Airmyn's dead used to be taken to Snaith by boat for burial, which was quicker than horse and cart!

LITTLE AIRMYN ...

LITTLE AIRMYN    is on the other side of the Aire,

many miles away by road via Carlton.

The village pub is called the Percy Arms ...

after the Heber Percy family who once owned the estates in and around Airmyn
